Apricots, scientifically known as Prunus armeniaca, is closely related to plums. The scientific name is derived from Armenia, which is where most scientists believe apricots originated. However, they were also present in ancient Greece and Rome, and many other experts claim that original cultivation happened in India more than 3,000 years ago.
Dried apricots are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, protein and dietary fiber. They’re especially rich in soluble fiber, the type that dissolves into a gel-like substance and binds to fatty acids to encourage their excretion in waste. This is the quality that gives soluble fiber its ability to reduce high LDL and total cholesterol levels. A half-cup serving of dried apricots provides 19 percent of the daily value for fiber. Apricots are often recommended to patients who regularly suffer from constipation due to its laxative properties.
