How to recognize organic products?
With the widespread popularity of healthy eating and ecology in society, many different products appeared on the shelves with the terms "organic", "ecological", etc. in their names. But are all these products really organic?
What products are considered organic?
Organic products must meet certain requirements set by European Union and Lithuanian legislation. Realization of such products, starting from cultivation and ending with sale, cannot harm people or nature. This aspect is strictly controlled by the relevant authorities during periodic inspections of organic farms.
You will recognize organic products from the labels
According to the European Union Regulation 2092/91/EEC and the laws of Lithuania, one term defining the concept of environmental friendliness is legalized - "organic". Therefore, other terms such as "organic", "bio", "natural" used on the packaging do not necessarily indicate the ecological nature of the product.
The most important indicator of an organic product is labeling. Organic products must have a certified logo confirming the product's ecological nature. All products that were grown or produced in Lithuania must be marked with the Organic Agriculture and EU organic production logo. Meanwhile, organic products that were produced outside of Lithuania are marked with only one EU organic production logo. Labels must also include the code of the body that controls organic products. In Lithuania, control is carried out by VŠĮ Ekoagros, code number: LT EKO 001.
Therefore, when choosing organic products, you should look for the following labeling:
